In South Carolina, a 3-year-old boy was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The boy’s death occurred last Friday after the boy was playing with a pink handgun that looks very much like a toy.
The boy was playing with the gun along with his 7-year-old sister while the grandparents were in the living room. Information about which child fired the weapon has not been released. The parents were not home at the time of the shooting.
The shooting was ruled an accidental homicide by Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler. Greenville Police Media Relations officer said, “If you have guns, if you own guns mostly we would prefer you have them in a lock box”. He went on to say that, it is best to keep guns out or reach of children.
Pink weapons have been part of an effort to make weapons appeal to women and younger groups. One man branded an assault rifle with the popular children’s character, Hello Kitty, for his wife.
Are handguns that look like toys to blame for the accidental death or should the owners of the gun be held accountable for leaving a gun lying around for children to play with?
