A gang member in prison for attempted murder charges from 2009 is father to five children, four of them from four different female correctional officers working in a Baltimore jail. In a wiretapped cell phone call the man was overheard saying, “This is my jail. You understand that? I’m dead serious. I make every final call in this jail.”
Two of the four women who fathered the inmate’s children went as far to have the man’s name tattooed on them. One tattoo was on the female correctional officer’s neck while the other on the woman’s wrist. In total, 13 officers have been indicted of aiding a gang run a drug enterprise and money laundering scheme from prison.
According to an affidavit, female officers with “low self-esteem and insecurities” were targeted to smuggle perception drugs and cell phones into the jail. The gang leaders paid officers with prepaid credit cards and bought luxury cars like a Mercedes-Benz and a BMW that they allowed the guards to drive. The drugs were sold inside the prison for three times the street value and helped to fund the gang leader’s initiatives.
The state prison chief, Gary D. Maynard, said that it is not uncommon for inmates to have sex with correctional workers and that it is normal to have female corrections officers in a jail. He noted that the gang strategically targeted the women who were willing to break the law. He added, that the department that oversees the prisons would vigorously review its screening polices for employees.
