Star Citizens was originally supported by backers on Kickstarter with $2.1 million from a $500,000 goal. As of press time, the game has backed $43 million on their website and that figure only represents a portion of the new goal. The game developers are selling early access and in-game items to support the development of the game.
As one would expect, the game features never before seen graphics in the space simulation genre. The creators have joined with Oculus Rift to make Star Citizens compatible with the upcoming virtual reality headset. The creators vision includes single player, co-op, and an open sandbox universe. So far, the available demo shows the impressive first person imagery and allows players to try out the combat system.
