The terrorist group ISIS is known to have a strong social media presence on Twitter and YouTube. Now they are upping their recruiting by targeting children that play online games.
An ISIS recruiter approached us online through the game Transformice. Most players of the game are in their teenage years. The recruiter appeared to be an adult based on their use of better than average grammar for the game.
Their intent appeared to be educating children about their mission of wanting to be recognized as a state. In addition, the recruiter said their goal was to claim control over the land in Syria and Iraq. They claimed ISIS only wanted peace.
Our brief encounter with the recruiter seemed to be a grooming process that may have eventually led to incentives to help ISIS further their cause. It has become more important than ever for parents to teach their children about the dangers of communicating online.
This isn’t the first time ISIS has been caught recruiting young people either. In June, a 23-year-old found she was in a similar situation where an ISIS recruiter had convinced her to join the terrorist organization.
